An English 1856 pattern pioneer's sword and scabbard - the single-edged steel blade with a pointed tip and the back edge formed with prominent saw teeth - the hilt of cast brass, with a ribbed grip - the leather scabbard with a brass locket and chape - issued to the Pioneer (or Engineer) soldiers attached to artillery brigades, the sawback edge allowed the blade to be used as a tool as well as a weapon
