a Martin Brothers "grotesque" cane handle

This is a pottery cane handle made by the Martin Brothers from Southall, who are famous for their "Wally Bird" vases & grotesque figures. This handle is unglazed, and modelled as a dragon like grotesque, curled upon a base. The handle was probably produced by Robert Wallace Martin, but is unsigned. It is presented on a turned wooden base, and has never been mounted. It is believed to be the only Martin Ware cane handle known and originally has come from a private collection. This cane handle was found on the floor of the Martin Brother's Southall Pottery after the site had been damaged by bombing in the second world war.
