An early scrimshaw-decorated sweethearts stay busk, carved from whalebone and given as a love token by a mariner - worked over one side with panels that include flowers, a love heart and other decorative motifs, all set within a sharks' tooth border - a rare and fine example - until 1830, corsets were known as 'stays' and busks were inserted into the front of a stay to flatten the wearer's stomach and keep her torso straight and upright
